Over 200 employees of Igara Growers Tea factory who were laid off early this month have threatened to set a demonstration demanding for their salaries. Police has deployed heavily at the factory yesterday after getting information that some people had stormed the factory and wanted to burn it. The Bushenyi district police commander Richard Anyama confirmed to BFM that they have deployed in order to contain the situation. Yesterday, during a press conference at Western Meridian Hotel in Bushenyi town, Mr. Arthur Muguzi said they decided to lay off some of the workers after the prices of Tea fell on the international market. Muguzi blames the situation to the continued wars in Arab countries which has been the major destination of Ugandan tea. The one of the former employees, Alex Twinamatsiko told BFM radio that they have laid off without paid their salaries for the last three months. He said that they were demanding for an explanation and assurance when they will be paid.
