Over Christmas break, I met a lady who had become pregnant by her live in boyfriend. They were not financially desperate, but a pretty normal couple. Rather than get married, they decided to wait until a few months after the baby was born so that they could take advantage of the government benefits for single moms - including prenatal, hospital, doctor, and baby food and supplies. OK - no big deal - happens all the time. Thats not the point of the post. The point is that the woman thought that having the government pay for their baby - even though the help was not needed - was perfectly fine . She was entitled. She was not embarrassed. She was proud of how she was taking advantage of the system and getting free care. Free as in paid for by tax dollars.
