Over at The Atlantic, Philip Bump, surmised that the use of “homeland” was simply an NSA ploy to make it appear as though the agency’s spying is more justified than it actually is: Normally, this would be written off as a design goof, as one of the NSA’s (newly adept) graphics guys using a little more light blue than he ought. This being the NSA, we’re not inclined to offer that benefit of the doubt. Is this a way of blending in Canadian and Mexican terror activity disruptions (which, we’ll remind you, is different from actual plots interrupted) to give a larger sense of the NSA’s success at halting terrorism within our borders? A closer look at the shading on the NSA map shows that Feinstein’s and the spy agency’s “homeland” also possibly includes Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Belize, Guatemala, maybe Panama, along with Cuba and the entire West Indies. And has anyone informed the people of Greenland that they are now subjects of The National Security Empire of the North American Union?
