Over the last 24hrs, Ive seen a lot of talk about the mental state of Robin Williams. A lot of people dont know this about me, but I have battled depression (and probably PTSD), ever since I lost my brother in 92. I truly believe that the only help that one can have to battle the disease has to come from within. Depression often leads to self medication, which then leads into addiction, hence why the only way to battle addiction has to come from within as well. Williams spent much of his time in rehab, self conscious of his disease. He wanted help. Depression comes in waves, it doesnt go away. Like addiction, it hangs over you daily, and, like fighting to not have a drink daily, you need to fight to gain self confidence and personal worth, daily, or else it gets harder and harder. Its a spiral, that you either go down easily, or take an enormous amount of energy to climb back up. Success in your career, gaining the finances to do what you like, and receiving praise for those things will not fight the disease for you. You need to take the time to truly value yourself, to learn to love yourself, unconditionally. Your happiness comes from within. People spend so much time chasing The American Dream, wanting to be judged on endeavours of material worth instead of taking the time to put worth into their lives. Its hard to know whats gonna make you happy when we are bombarded with bullshit daily, and never told how to love yourself. Therefore, I say to all of my friends currently battling depression (and addiction), you are LOVED!!! It may not mean anything coming from me, but I love you! You can fight this, you are strong, you are beautiful and you deserve to treat yourself properly. Sacrifice short term pleasures for your long term goal of happiness, and in due time, you will look at your accomplishments and gain self worth. It doesnt matter who loves you if you dont love yourself first, so always remember to work on yourself first. Much love to everyone, and RIP Robin Williams.
