Over the last two weeks I went back and forth about buying a car, buying a dog, buying something to show that Ive moved up in the world. To show that Im growing up like Im supposed to. I almost bought a Mustang Convertible. Almost. I kept comparing myself to the rest of this town. They have this and they have that and what do I have? Wow. Im so glad and so relieved I didnt do that. I guess this is what they call the quarter life crisis. Its not the fear of getting older - its the fear of getting older and not visibly doing better. It became clear to me as I returned the car to its rightful owner and walked back home that the truest way to judge a man is by whether he can stay out of the rat race or get pulled along into it. Weak is the man who must have money to feel rich. Having beautiful things doesnt automatically mean there is something lacking inside that assures you of your beauty, but one has to know oneself. Music is beautiful even if its not pumped through a fancy sound system in a nice car. Bodies are beautiful even if their not clothed in designer fabric. Cities are beautiful even if youre not residing in their nicest apartments or fanciest hotels. Ill take this moment as a somber reflection point. I dont want to be distracted by material possessions. Its about whos in the car not the vehicle itself. Moving on.
