Over the next few weeks, Insiders Tarik El-Bashir and Rich Tandler - TopicsExpress

Over the next few weeks, Insiders Tarik El-Bashir and Rich Tandler will take a position-by-position look at the Redskins’ depth chart. Some battles are straightforward. Others could get complicated. This much, however, cannot be debated: A player is not on the 53-man roster until its finalized Aug 31. So who’s in? And who’s in jeopardy? Up today … Position: X wide receiver On the roster: Pierre Garçon, Santana Moss, Devery Henderson, Dez Briscoe, Skye Dawson, Nick Williams Likely to make the 53: Garçon, Moss Comment: If the Redskins’ offense is going to get better and become more explosive, Garçon is going to have to stay on the field. He missed six games with a toe ailment last year and he was too hampered by the injury to be effective in two others. The good thing for the Redskins is that Garçon doesn’t have a history of injury problems. He’s only played in 16 games in a season once but until this year he had played in at least 14 games. Moss was the team’s X receiver (the one that lines up on the line of scrimmage) for seven years before Garçon was signed last year. He will be lining up in the slot for the most part, a role in which he thrived last year. Playing fewer than half of the offensive snaps, Moss led the team in touchdown receptions with eight and was second in receiving yards. Battling for a job: Henderson, Briscoe, Dawson, Williams Comment: Henderson’s production with the Saints last year was unimpressive (22 rec/316 yards/1 TD, all career lows) especially considering that the Saints called almost 700 pass plays. He is 31 and he could rebound but he will be in a battle with a few others to make the team. The Redskins kept Briscoe on the roster through all 16 games last year even though he was only active for seven games and none of those were during the team’s seven-game winning streak to close out the regular season. They must have seen some potential in him since they devoted one of the precious 53 roster spots to him all year but he will need to step up and show some progress if he is going to stick around this year. Williams and Dawson are undrafted free agents who probably would be doing well to snag a spot on the practice squad.
