View slideshow: PR Springs Family Camp Out A trip was organized to the abandoned Leonard Murphy tar sands test site that was decommissioned in 1983. This site shows no signs of environmental recovery as tar still leaks from the mine site itself and plant life is still minimal. The leaking tar presents a hazard to animals in the area as chipmunks, butterflies, mice and birds are routinely trapped in the viscous liquid with no hope for escape. The children took and analyzed water samples at the camp. They also learned nonviolent direct action techniques to combat those who want to destroy the environment in the quest for energy and profits. They used these techniques when they invited the lone worker at the Canadian U.S. Oil Sands’ man camp to dinner. They were also able to use their skills during a photo op the next day. getting people to become aware of what is really out in the high desert area, UTSR hopes that people will realize that it is a place worth saving for future generations of children, plants and animals. Bird and wildlife viewing activities led to the discovery of woodpeckers, turkeys, elk, deer and many other animals that call the area home.
