Over the winter we have been making a number of redevelopments to the Peace Plot area of Bambooselem. Some of our more seasoned visitors may remember the damage caused by the storms in 2005, in which the large Eucalyptus came down and obliterated many large shrubs and damaged part of the ‘Handkerchief Tree’ (Davidia involucrata). Not to be perturbed we saw this as an opportunity and planted the area with the now popular ‘Wollemi Pines’ (Wollemia nobilis). This winter’s work has seen a continued development in this area in which much of the existing herbaceous elements in the border have been dug out ready for this area to be planted anew. Because this left a rather large space empty, we saw it befitting to plant an equally large shrub; Rhododendron sinogrande SBEC. This rather choice shrub came from Inverewe’s very own Rhododendron nursery (originally a gift from NTS Brodick Castle, Garden and Country Park), it took a tractor to lift it from its nursery and a team of four gardeners to move it to its site and carefully plant it. The large sections of the fallen Eucalyptus, remnants of the destructive windfall that blocked the access to this area, have also been moved. As we felt they had a charm of their own, and in their own right tell a story, we have repositioned them to include them in developments of this area. - Matt Fox, Gardener
