Overcrowding Creates Crisis at Charleston Animal Society Free Adoptions Being Offered to Ease Overcrowding CHARLESTON, SC -- Charleston Animal Society is making an urgent plea to the community and other rescue groups to please make room for one more. “In the past two weeks, we have been flooded with a summer surge of dogs and cats,” said Charleston Animal Society Senior Director of Animal Services, Pearl Sutton. We are rescuing so many animals that cages are lining the hallways. The Animal Society facility at 2455 Remount Road is built to house 230 animals, and in the past two weeks, 251 dogs and 464 cats have been brought to Lowcountry’s largest animal rescue organization. To help with the overcrowding, Charleston Animal Society is offering free adoptions on all animals through Sunday. One example of the animals being rescued is a 3-month-old lab mix, who witnesses saw being thrown from a car at a Waffle House parking lot on Ashley Phosphate Road in North Charleston. Charleston Animal Society veterinarians and staff are working with the puppy to determine the extent of his injuries and help him recover. Roman had to sedate the kitten to remove it from the engine in North Charleston. The animal is recovering in the Kitten Intensive Care Unit after having its leg amputated and will be placed in a foster home.
