Overload I look into Iriss watery eyes and I see that familiar - TopicsExpress

Overload I look into Iriss watery eyes and I see that familiar distant gaze I had hoped I wouldnt see again, the one where she doesnt look at me, rather through me and its impossible to connect. With her face suddenly drained and pale I know right away that life has got too much for her and she is retreating into the world where she spent so long alone. It has been easy to forget Iriss Autism lately and how things are effecting her, she was doing so well but with the excitement of the past week seeing family and them staying, the arrival of Thula and all the happiness of the Italian themed activity club it has got too much, her senses overloaded and struggling to cope. She points at the lamp on my desk, I turn it off, then I see her body curled up with her legs tucked in and her head down, I say quietly Iris, hold my hand she takes it, I carry her up the stairs with her clinging onto me. With our arms linked we lie side by side under the heavy duvet for a long while in silence and she gradually relaxes, turning to me looking into my eyes, she is coming back to me and her senses are calming. Thula joins us on the bed, snuggling up close to Iris, instinctively knowing that she needs her there and as she stretches her paw the long tufts of soft fur brush over Iriss tummy and I hear her giggle.
