PACIFIC JET ROARS, TEMPERATURES SOAR!! December was ALWAYS the - TopicsExpress

PACIFIC JET ROARS, TEMPERATURES SOAR!! December was ALWAYS the month where there was a lot of uncertainty. This had to do with the overall pattern needing time to lock itself in. I actually showed this on the air three weekends ago. Novembers cold was in large part thanks to Super Typhoon Nuri. That single storm, which was the strongest storm ever (in terms of pressure) in the Bering Sea and Gulf Of Alaska dramatically changed the overall weather pattern across the entire Northern Hemisphere. It dislodged the arctic air from the Arctic Circle, allowing the polar express to come charging down the plains. Over the next three weeks that mild pattern that we were dealing with prior to this cold change from Nuri will be making a come back. The progression of the warmth (relative to averages) over the next few weeks is amazing! Theres absolutely no winter to be found at all, none. Not even in Canada! Like I said yesterday, we do have a few days in the 40s in our 7 day forecast. But to me thats not cold. Theres no cross polar flow in the pattern, the oscillation indexes are all in the wrong place, nothing. The way things are looking right now, those few days that we do see in the 40s might end up being the coldest weather we have all month (Im being sarcastic, but theres always that possibility in this kind of pattern). The first three images below are temperature departure maps taken in five day increments that run from December 11th-26th. Look at how expansive the warmth is as it runs right through the heart of Canada! Temperatures are being predicted to run anywhere from 3-5 degrees above normal here in the Delaware Valley. But as much as 10-15 degrees above normal across the High Plains and Canada. The fourth image below takes a snap shot of all of North America. Theres just nothing out there at all if youre a winter weather fan. Now a lot of this warmth is front end loaded. Theres some cold showing up the last week of the month. But whats disturbing about that for the winter weather fan is this cold, just three days ago, was showing up by the 20th. So its becoming more and more delayed with every passing model run. So wheres all the cold this month you ask? Its in Asia of course! Image number five shows all the cold air locked up in Siberia. You also note the cold pocket of air in the Atlantic. That Atlantic trough needs to retrograde west, which in turn would force the ridge, or warmth, west. Until then winters on hold. By the way, YES, I still like a cold and snowy January! :)
