PANAJI: Corporation of the city of Panaji (CCP) mayor Surendra Furtado said that setting up of a gaming commission or board with CCP as its important constituent was necessary to ensure an effective system for correct decisions that can stand the test of legal scrutiny. In a press note, the mayor stated that the casino industry is evolving and has grown multifold since its inception. The gaming establishment contributes to the growth of tourism in the state. But, assessing the recent developments and incidents, including the drowning of a youth after a fall from an off-shore casino, a regulatory body is needed to manage and regulate the gambling industry in Goa, he said. Furtado stated that its immediate establishment with CCP as a constituent is essential. "Engagement of the gaming commission and CCP as the civic establishment are of much importance. One of the oldest gaming boards in the world, the British gaming commission, has something called the local authority liaison unit which works with all the Borough councils in and around Metropolitan area of London. The local authority liaison unit closely works with the civic bodies in all aspects of the functioning of the gaming commission, including granting of licences," the press note states. Furtado said that although the gaming commission in association with the CCP would be responsible for the primary activities, it would also be ensuring that gaming is conducted fairly and in a transparent manner, ensure a safe environment for gaming and promoting gaming awareness and protecting children and the most vulnerable from adverse effects of gambling
