PAUL CHAPHUKA TAONA MAVUTO This would make an interesting title for a long essay in the Department of English at Chancellor College and I would be ready to co-supervise…: “Patrilineality in the Eyes of an Orphan Child in Paul Chaphuka’s Taona Mavuto and Other Songs.” Sample two stanzas Mavuto tawaona Ena mukati mwaona mavuto Taona manthu wa mavuto ife Mphwanga tabwera yapa ndikuuze iwe Tatsala tokha ulimbe mtima Kusagwirizana kwa bambo ndi abale awo Ukapolo tiuwone ndife ana otsalafe Lero iwo anapita kutisiira mavuto awa Tilowela kuti m’dziko la eni? Ndimalimba mtima ine kuti pali achimwene Lero ndi awa alowa mtchire misala Ndikhumbira kubwelera kwathu ine Ndipita bwanji nanga? Kulowolaku nkowawa ine Adzakhali takhululukani inu ife ana anu Kulakwa kwa makolo musalange ana Mutenga nsambi In this system, all is well when all is well. But once in a while, we should take a break from looking at systems and traditions through ordinary eyes. We must, sometimes, look at life through the eye of a child, an orphan in particular. And Chaphuka re/presents and re/constructs such a world of orphans for us, orphans in a system that defines children as belonging to the father. The orphan child in the song wants to run away from home and go home but he cannot because he is at home. Yet he is not feeling at home at his home.
