PAUL CHEN ROCK REPORT! There is a window of opportunity this weekend to get out there to enjoy some great winter straylining action with the incoming tide. Places that have been working of late are still the inshore areas along from Whangaparoa, Tiri, East Coast Bays, Taka, Narrowneck, Rangi shallows and Ponui Island. When I say shallow some of these places are 2 – 3m in depth. Undoubtedly using a dedicated baitrunner system for this style of angling is easier to not only cast the lightly weighted baited hooks well astern into the best part of the berley trail. But more importantly it allows wary fish to mouth and “feel out” the bait without been spooked by the line’s connection to mankind hanging expectantly onto the other end. The latest Shimano Baitrunners on Apex graphite rod combos exclusive to Top Catch are definitely worth looking at to use for this style of fishing. There are models and sizes that will match your requirements. Using berley is another critical element in this equation for success with straylining. Salmon berley is my favourite and once the sheen of the oil is glazed across the surface astern of your boat. It’s also easier to pick out the natural current flows as it meanders towards your chosen target zone. Letting you cast your baits with more precision and placement. Don’t just toss it out back anywhere there are definitely sweet spots that have a higher ratio of hooked fish you will find. Anchor up with wind and tide in line a good 20 – 30m off your chosen spot and cast a selection of baits to the edges of the reef or seaweed line. Top Catch latest Red Plate pillies are proving themselves in the field to be baits that stays on your hook after partial defrosting and has that oily goodness that will tempt fish. Another bait to try out is the Bullet Tuna these are literally like a skippy in miniature that’s the equivalent size of a pillie. Out wider Captain Kyle is finding them in 40m in the Firth of Thames before this current batch of winter rains arrived. Inchiku colours working best has been in blue and green. 80 - 100 gms. Still winter days are some of the best in the Auckland angling season. Dress up warmly and while instore please checkout our Ridgeline range of winter clothing that Top Catch has chosen for the winter angler. Don’t get cabin fever; get out there to enjoy some of the best action that’s around. It’s better than sitting at home. Fish smarter people.
