PBSA body to discuss resignations today KARACHI: The Executive Committee of the Pakistan Billiards & Snooker Association (PBSA) will discuss the resignations submitted by the top officials of the body in a meeting at the Karachi Club Annexe yesterday. Alamgir Shaikh and Munawwar Shaikh, who were elected for a second term as President and Secretary, respectively, of the PBSA last year, submitted their resignations in a meeting on October 12 after heated debate with a few EC members. It has been confirmed that Ali Asghar Valika, who remained President of the PBSA for 20 years, was approached to mediate and find a solution acceptable to both the parties. Reliable sources said Alamgir mobilized all his resources and contacts during the past three weeks to bring about a change in the attitude as well as the stance of the EC members to let him complete the remaining three years of his second successive term as President. The sources said the future of the whole EC was uncertain and there was possibility of government intervention. The PBSA, it may be recalled, was disaffiliated by the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) in 2008, following a series of controversies, which included a revolt by the leading cueists of the country. The sources have claimed that the authorities in Islamabad, while monitoring the situation closely, were considering the option of dissolving the PBSA and appointing an ad hoc committee to streamline the matters. The sources added that since the bone of contention was financial matters the federal government could also order a forensic audit to determine negligence. Meanwhile, the local snooker circles have voiced their concern over the latest controversy and have demanded a proper investigation into the matter even if it was “amicably resolved” by the warring parties within the EC. “There have been quite a few major controversies in the snooker administration during the past five or six years which take the gloss off the glories earned by the hard-working cueists,” one of the life members of the PBSA said. “The need of the hour is a proper federation with representation of all provinces to promote cue sports,” he added. There are hopes of an amicable settlement following the series of informal meetings having taken place since October 12.
