PDP Crisis: Only Supreme Court Can Stop Us – ‘New PDP’ By: Abu Nmodu, Chibuzo Ukaibe, Kunle Olasanmi on October 19, 2013 - 2:52am . PDP CRISIS: ONLY SUPREME COURT CAN STOP US As a Federal High Court in Abuja foiled its bid to emerge as a political party, the “New PDP” led by Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, has said that only the Supreme Court can stop it. Soon after Justice Evoh Chukwu of a Federal High Court in Abuja stopped members of the Baraje faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from parading themselves as the national officers of the ruling party, the group said it was heading to the Supreme Court to pursue the legitimacy of its producing the authentic leaders of the PDP. The splinter group also called the PDP’s bluff by insisting that it would not desist from using the party’s flag, logo and name, because it had the bona fide members of the party. Following the court ruling, the mainstream PDP led by Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, warned Baraje’s group to desist from using its name, logo and flag. It threatened that any unauthorised use of the party’s name by the faction would be criminalised. In a reaction to the court verdict, spokesman of the Baraje faction, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze said, “We hereby reiterate that we will see this issue to a logical conclusion, including going to the Supreme Court, if necessary, to ensure that a non-member of our party does not continue to lord it over us as our national chairman. “Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and his loyalists should, therefore, not celebrate yet, as any such celebration would be short-lived, as we are more than ever determined to show him the way out of the exalted position he is illegally occupying. “We, meanwhile, insist that we have every right to continue using the PDP flag, symbol and colours, as we are the bona fide members of the party and thus entitled to use them.” The group also called on the federal government to direct relevant security agencies to investigate a purported plot to kidnap the governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, with a view to compelling him to sign his resignation letter. Reacting to a report in a national daily, which claimed that some politicians in the state were hatching a plot to kidnap the governor, the “New PDP” warned that any attempt to execute the plot would be an invitation to anarchy. Also, yesterday, former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida said that the ruling PDP had the capacity to resolve its lingering crisis. Also speaking, his Minna, Niger State neighbour and former head of state, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar asked the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to shift ground on their strike, because the industrial action had been taken too far. He also condemned the rising oil theft in the Niger Delta region. The two leaders spoke to journalists yesterday after paying Sallah homage to the governor of Niger State, Muazu Babangida Aliyu, at his residence in Minna, the state capital. Babangida, who refused to speak in detail on the PDP crisis, simply told Abdulsalami to react to some of the questions asked. He said the PDP crisis would soon be resolved, as all the stakeholders were doing everything possible to end it. “We will overcome the crisis in the party; the crisis will soon be in the past. We are doing everything possible to resolve the issues,” Babangida said. Abdulsalami asked the striking members of ASUU and the federal government to reach a compromise and call off the strike in the interest of the country. “I appeal to everybody to give peace a chance, for the strikers to sheathe their sword and the government to as fast as possible resolve the issues at stake. I believe strike by workers is normal globally but in Nigeria, we are overdoing it. Strikes in advanced countries are done for hours or days to draw attention to their plight,” Abdulsalami noted. Abdulsalami also enjoined Nigerians to as a matter of obligation provide security agents with information on activities of criminals, to enable the government tackle the issue of insecurity in the country. He condemned oil theft in the country, saying, “I will say they are not doing the right thing. As such, we must come together to ensure that we have a peaceful country
