PEACOCK BLAZONS CORONA - S SHAPE This is a follow-up to the last post, as a closer shot of the distinctive S shape the peacock uses as part of the Corona Flutter courtship performance preview. Most of us have seen, if nothing else, photos of the classic peacock courtship display of the flared erect train that is by far the most spectacular part of the performance. However, after spending a day with a pulchritude of peafowl, I discovered that the entire performance was so much more elaborate. The peacock meticulously preens his plumage into its coruscating best, as seen in the previous post, struts his territory, kinks his lithe neck into a characteristic S shape, squints to protect his eyes, and vigorously flutters his corona or crest feathers. These polychromatic feathers are incredibly detailed, and glitter splendiferously in the sun.
