PH NEWS UPDATE... PH NEWS UPDATE... PH NEWS UPDATE... Michigan Attorney General and Governor Oppose Local Marijuana Vote.... Michigan Attorney General, Bill Schuette, and Michigan Governor, Rick Snyder, oppose the a November Ballot Proposal that if passed would change the City of Port Huron Charter and decriminalize the possession of small amounts of Marijuana for recreational and medical use within the City of Port Huron. Both the Attorney General and the Governor are now on record as saying that whether or not the voters of Port Huron approves a City Charter Amendment will not change the way the Port Huron Pubic Safety Department and other local Law Enforcement Agencies enforce State and Federal Laws regarding possession and use of Marijuana in Port Huron. Governor Snyder said, Regardless of whether or not the Proposed Amendment to the Port Huron City Charter by Voters passes in November, Marijuana will remain a controlled substance under State and Federal Law. Port Huron Law Enforcement will Continue to Enforce Criminal Laws without regard to any Local Voter City Charter Changes, Governor Snyder went on to say. Port Huron City Manager, James Freed and Public Safety Chief Reaves also indicated that any change to the Port Huron City Charter is hollow and will not change Criminal Arrests for drug possession and use in the City of Port Huron. Both Reaves and Freed, agree that Federal and State Law trumps any symbolic empty attempts to locally change the fact that Marijuana is a controlled drug and to use or possess illegal substances in Port Huron will result in arrest and prosecution. Laura Rigby, the local organizer of the November Ballot Proposal indicated that she anticipated the short sighted reaction to this proposal. City Councilman, Allen Lewandowski, has been a strong supporter of the Charter Amendment and expects that the City of Port Huron would respect the wishes of the voters. Lewandowski went on to state, If the voters pass this, then the City Council needs to find a way to make this work, especially if it passes by a large margin. City Manager, James Freed indicated that the efforts to change State and Federal Law should be focused on lobbying the elected representatives who have the ability to change the law, not try to confuse the issue by pushing local proposals that will not change how Marijuana possession and use is enforced within Port Huron.
