PHANTOM DRAFT I will be posting my pantom draft in 4 parts. Round 1 and 2 tonight, and round 3 and a summary tomorrow. Round 1: 1. GWS – Tom Boyd (Eastern Ranges) D.O.B: 22.8.1995 Height: 199cm Weight: 102kg Position: Full Forward Tom Boyd is the complete package! For someone of his size he has incredible athletic ability, and he is a great contested mark. Tom Boyd is a beast physically and will intimidate even the most seasoned defenders. Tom Boyd would walk into any AFL side, and GWS would be stupid not to take him. 2. GWS – Josh Kelly (Sandringham Dragons) D.O.B: 12.2.1995 Height: 183cm Weight: 75kg Position: Midfield GWS rate Josh Kelly very highly and it seems likely they will use their 2nd pick to select him. Josh Kelly is an elite-runner and elite ball user, who knows how to find the footy. Although he is predominantly an outside midfielder, he makes up for it with his endurance and elite kicking. GWS may also opt to take James Aish or the versatile Matthew Scharenberg. 3. STK – Matthew Scharenberg (Glenelg) D.O.B: 18.9.1995 Height: 190cm Weight: 89kg Position: Half Back/Midfield/Half Forward Likened to Brendan Goddard, Matt Scharenberg is super versatile. He can play off half back, through the midfield or half forward. Scharenberg is an elite ball user and a natural leader. St Kilda may choose to instead take gun midfielder James Aish, or even Jack Billings. 4. WBD – James Aish (Norwood) D.O.B: 8.11.1995 Height: 184cm Weight: 75kg Position: Midfield Western Bulldogs could find gun midfielder James Aish fall into their laps at pick 4. James Aish has already played two years of senior footy for Norwood, and been a part of two SANFL premierships. James Aish oozes class, he is an elite ball user, he is a good mover, he has good hands, he is calm under pressure and he can use the ball on both sides of his body. The only thing that worries me is his contested possession rate is under 30%, and some say he is too much of an outside player. If James Aish is still there at pick 4 I can’t see the Bulldogs not taking him. 5. GCS – Jack Billings (Oakleigh Chargers) D.O.B: 18.8.1995 Height: 184cm Weight: 78kg Position: Half Forward/Midfield Jack Billings plays mostly off the forward flank, but can be rotated through the midfield. For a small forward he is a great overhead mark, and is an elite kick for goal, rarely missing a set shot. Jack Billing’s greatest attribute however is his speed and his ability to find space when there is no space. Gold Coast has shown interest in Kade Kolodjashnij and may elect to draft him over Billings, leaving Billings to slip to Collingwood. 6. COLL – Kade Kolodjashnij (Launceston) D.O.B: 9.8.1995 Height: 190cm Weight: 81kg Position: Half Back Was originally picked to go around the pick 10 mark, but after an impressive draft combine could go much higher, with rumours Gold Coast will use their pick 5 on him. Kolodjashnij is a great runner and ball carrier who also has great hands. He always uses the ball well and is a good link up player. He plays mostly off half back, but can play up on the wing. He would be a suitable replacement for Heath Shaw. If Gold Coast pick Kolodjashnij Collingwood won’t pass up the opportunity to get Jack Billings. 7. BRIS – Ben Lennon (Northern Knights) D.O.B: 5.7.1995 Height: 188cm Weight: 77kg Position: Half Forward/Midfield Ben Lennon is a similar player to Jack Billings, he plays predominantly of the half forward flank and can be filtered through the midfield, he also is capable of playing off half back. He can become a goal kicking midfielder who is dangerous around goals. Brisbane could also use pick 7 to draft Nathan Freeman or Marcus Bontempelli. 8. NTH – Luke McDonald-Father/Son (Werribee) D.O.B: 9.2.1995 Height: 188cm Weight: 85kg Position: Midfield/Half Back Would probably go top 5 if North Melbourne didn’t take him as a father son pick. McDonald can play on the half back flank or through the midfield. His biggest weapon is his accurate 60m kick, he also has strong speed and agility and he is also great one on one. He has been labelled as a future captain. 9. MEL – Nathan Freeman (Sandringham Dragons) D.O.B: 16.6.1995 Height: 182cm Weight: 85kg Position: Midfield Nathan Freeman is a very similar player to Patrick Dangerfield. He is super speedy, but he’s also a great inside midfielder. Freeman has the ability to kick goals from outside 50 and he can change direction quickly. Freeman’s only weakness is his endurance, if he can improve his endurance he will become an elite all-rounded midfielder. 10. COLL – Marcus Bontempelli (Northern Nights) D.O.B: 24.11.1995 Height: 191cm Weight: 83kg Position: Midfield Nick Dal Santo’s cousin Marcus Bontempelli is a tall speedy midfielder, who has good vision and good hands. Bontempelli is a similar player to Scott Pendlebury, he has the size to be an inside midfielder and the speed to be an outside midfielder. Bontempelli could go as high as pick 6. 11. WCE – Dominic Sheed (Subiaco) D.O.B: 10.4.1995 Height: 184cm Weight: 83kg Position: Midfield Dom Sheed won this year’s Larke medal, and a lot of people thought he could go as high as pick 2, if he had more leg speed. Dom Sheed is almost the complete package, he is damaging as an outside player with a long and accurate kick, and he is also a stoppage specialist. Sheed can drift forward and kick goals, and he can also hold his own in a one on one contest. 12. RIC – Christian Saleem (Sandringham Dragons) D.O.B: 15.7.1995 Height: 183cm Weight: 81kg Position: Midfield Christian Saleem is possibly the most elite ball user in this year’s draft crop. He is so excellent on both sides of his body, and it’s near impossible to tell which his preferred foot is. Saleem is a terrific runner, and would be a welcomed addition to Richmond’s young midfield. 13. CAR – Cameron McCarthy (South Fremantle) D.O.B: 1.4.1995 Height: 195cm Weight: 89kg Position: Centre Half Forward Cameron McCarthy is the second best forward of this year’s draft prospects, and could help solve Carlton’s forward line woes. He has a terrific leap, and an incredible overhead mark. McCarthy is also agile for someone of his size, and he’s good at ground level. 14. GWS – Lewis Taylor (Geelong Falcons) D.O.B: 17.2.1995 Height: 173cm Weight: 73kg Position: Midfield GWS would get themselves a steal here if Lewis Taylor slips to 14. Like Brent Harvey Taylor is a short midfielder who can win his own ball, but is also a damaging outside midfielder. Taylor is also known as a classy midfielder who can use the side-step to hurt the opposition. 15. SYD – Matthew Crouch (North Ballarat Rebels) D.O.B: 21.4.1995 Height: 180cm Weight: 78kg Position: Midfield Matt Crouch, brother of Adelaide’s Brad is a different midfielder, but almost as good. Crouch had an excellent TAC cup and didn’t have one game where he got less than 30 disposals. Crouch is a stoppage specialist, and he’s comfortably the best in the draft. Crouch could go higher, but I expect him to be available at pick 15. 16. GEE – Darcy Gardiner (Geelong Falcons) D.O.B: 22.9.1995 Height: 192cm Weight: 85kg Position: Full Back Darcy Gardiner has been labelled the best key defender in this year’s draft. He is best known as a lock-down player, and was the only player able to limit the influence of Tom Boyd. Geelong’s backline is aging and Gardiner would be the perfect replacement in years to come, and could form an excellent partnership with All-Australian Harry Taylor. 17. FRE – Blake Acres (West Perth) D.O.B: 7.10.95 Height: 189cm Weight: 84kg Position: Midfield Blake Acres is one of the most balanced midfielder in this year’s draft, and he could be taken with Fremantle’s pick 17. Acres can be damaging as an outside midfielder, and he has the grunt to win his own ball. Acres also knows how to finish off with a goal. 18. STK – Trent Durmont (Norwood) D.O.B: 30.6.1995 Height: 186cm Weight: 83kg Position: Midfield/Half Back Trent Durmont has an accurate kick and is an elite decision maker, Durmont also possesses explosiveness out of stoppages. Durmont can be utilised off half back, where his run and carry can be used. Durmont is also strong in contested situations. 19. STK – Luke Dunstan (Woodville West Torrens) D.O.B: 29.1.1995 Height: 185cm Weight: 83kg Position: Midfield Dunstan has been likened to Luke Ball, and he often flies under the radar. Although he lacks speed and isn’t an outside midfielder, he provides grunt at stoppages. Dunstan is a hard- working midfielder who could help bring St Kilda back up the ladder in coming years. 20. GCS – Billy Hartung (Dandenong Stingrays) D.O.B: 24.1.1995 Height: 177cm Weight: 75kg Position: Half Back/Midfield Billy Hartung is a flashy midfielder, who can be utilised of half back. Hartung is an exciting player capable of line-breaking runs, and he’s known to take three bounces or more. Hartung has improved his consistency this year and Gold Coast may be take him in the first round.
