PHILIPPIANS FB STUDY “THE OVERVIEW” By: Pastor Jay McLaughlin To begin with we need to know more about “Objectives and Flexibility.” We will need to understand, these can, and should be, allowed to be applied all the way through any study you may do. To really gain from any study, you need to learn how to apply the “Objectives and Flexibility” method to each verse as you proceed. Just reading a verse does not always leave your mind blessed with its context, yet that is what you are desiring to grasp when you are looking into any section of scripture. Below are some steps and goals in any of the areas of deeper study, and they will become natural to you as you apply them. 1. Objective list: 1. A firm foundation and understanding. 2. To teach us how to study scripture. 3. Historical backgrounds, definitions, explanations, and references. 4. Getting a grasp on the message as a whole. 5. Letting God’s word transform you into His image. 6. No set time limits, a study must be flexible, and objective. 3. Flexibility: 1. Adjust the study to meet desired your need, or that of a group. 2. Use of optional questions to enhance the study level. 3. Use cross-references to spark thought and discussion. 4. Use questions that delve deeper into the passage and thought. 5. Use an outline if it will help you get to a better understand. 4. Overview and Details: 1.Read all overviews/commentaries, as they are a key to understanding the context. (1) 2.What you should ask yourself? A. Why did the author, and God, write this book? B. What did they want to accomplish? C. Simply what is the book about? 3.When all studies are finished, try to review the study. As reviewing helps insure your remember, and to not lose what you learned 5. The three questions you need to ask yourself. A. “All bible studies follow a three step progression” 1. First you observe: A. What does the passage say? 2. Secondly you interpret: A. What does the passage mean? 3. Lastly you apply: A. How can, and does this truth effect my life? B. Other questions to ask yourself while studding. 1. Ask many how and why questions? 2. Is my study just for knowledge, self application, or both? 3. Am I staying in dialogue with God in the study? Relate it to other scriptures. 4. What does God you want me to see? 5. Father, why is this true? 6. Lord, how does this apply to my life? C. Write down your answers and thoughts, and meditate on them. 1. It helps to clarify the answer, or question. 2. Meditating helps clarify the facts, and conviction to sink in. 3. This helps you act upon them for your life. 4. Find some quite time and review, meditate, and pray. 6. Study aids: A. A good bible, I used the NIV and the NKJV most of the time. B. Get good commentaries on any book of study, as God clearly says say’s “There is wisdom in an abundance of Councilors.” (2) 7. Scripture versions: A. Our study book is from the NIV and NKJV, But any top of the mark interpretation should be fine to use, Like the NAS, RSV, even the old KJV. It is your choice. ( Warning, some new bibles out fall short of what the original interpretation states as the meaning of a passage, and fail to give you what God intended). 8. Memorizing and meditating: A. Memorizing my verse enhances it’s ability to change the things God wants changed in your life. B. We forget quickly what we just read, we remember what we ponder over, and over. 9. Single or Group study: A. Both new and mature believers can always benefit from any bible study, and should gain needed strength as they apply themselves. B. All studies can be split away from the original so as to discuss them much more deeply. C. In a Group, the leader should be allowed to add or subtract questions as they see it is needed. D. All questions should be answered and related back to the study at hand. I’ll do that as we go along. E. The end of every study should be open for any question that someone might have so to be explained deeper, and made much clear for their understanding. Tomorrow, I will give you the Historical Background. This important so you can understand what the people in the passage are going through in their daily lives, and for why the writer of the book is addressing them as he is. I will keep all studies posted, so when someone new comes upon the study, they can start from the beginning, without feeling the need to rush to catch up. Just go at your pace, and with the free time you have. The important thing to gain is as much new knowledge that the writer and God, has planned for you for the betterment of Gods kingdom and glory. Enjoy your study, stay relaxed, and don’t feel pressured. That is not a part of my agenda, never. Remember, Satan does not want us to grow, so be prepared to battle and to grow more into Christ likeness and maturity, it is well worthy of your effort. Tomorrow will be the Historical section. (3)
