PHILIPPINES, INDONESIA CONCLUDE 3RD PREPARATORY MEETING FOR BOUNDARY DELIMITATION TALKS 06 May 2014 - The Philippines and Indonesia have recently concluded in Jakarta the 3rd Preparatory Meeting of the 8th Joint Permanent Working Group on Maritime and Ocean Concerns (JPWG-MOC) aimed at identifying an option to delimit the overlapping Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) of both countries in the Mindanao/Celebes Sea. The technical panels discussed the option for establishing the EEZ boundary of the Philippines and Indonesia guided by the relevant positions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and international law principles to achieve an equitable solution to their overlapping EEZs. The Philippines and Indonesian Technical Panels will finalize their discussions on the EEZ boundary option at the 4th Preparatory Meeting to be held in Manila later this year. The results of the 4th Preparatory Meeting will then be referred to the 8th Meeting of the JPWG-MOC, which will also be held in Manila after the Preparatory Meeting. The JPWG-MOC will submit a recommendation to the Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary and Indonesian Foreign Minister on the proposed EEZ boundary. The members of the Philippines Technical Panel to the 3rd Preparatory Meeting in Jakarta are Mr. Gilberto Asuque, Delegation Head; Ms.Lilybeth R. Deapera, Acting Assistant Secretary for the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Ocean Concerns Office; Mr. Efren Carandang, Deputy Administrator, National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), Department of Environment and Natural Resources; Mr. Robert Manalo, Deputy Chief of Mission, Philippine Embassy in Jakarta; Mr. Josel Mostajo, Director, DFA Ocean Concerns Office; Capt. Herbert Catapang, OIC- Assistant Director, Hydrography Branch, NAMRIA; Mr. Dennis Bringas, Geophysicist IV, NAMRIA; Col. Raniel Ramiro (GSC) PA, Defense Attaché, Philippine Embassy in Jakarta; and Msgt. Ramon Chuaquico, PA, Administrative Assistant, Office of the Philippine Defense Attaché, Philippine Embassy in Jakarta. The 25-member Indonesian Technical Panel was led by Director Octavino Alimudin and assisted by, among others, Dr. Sobar Sutsina, Senior Researcher, Geospatial Information Agency; Cdre. Dede Yulladi, Chief Hydrographer, Hydro-Oceangraphic Office, Indonesian Navy; Dr. Ing. Khafid, Head of Boundary Mapping Center, Geospatial Information Agency; and Dr. Tony Ruchimat, Director for Fisheries Resources, Ministy of Fisheries and Marine Affairs. END
