PHILISTINE OF THE YEAR David Mackintosh, Tory leader of Northampton borough council, for his part in flogging a 4,500-year-old Egyptian statue from the town’s museum in a shabby deal cooked up with the seventh Marquess of Northampton, whose ancestor donated it to the town “forever hereafter”. The marquess, who already has a £120m fortune, trousered 45 percent of the £15.8m proceeds. Mackintosh spitefully banned the chair of the Friends of Northampton Museum, Gunilla Loe, from acting as a volunteer at the museum because she opposed the sale.
