PHILS FOLK ARCHIVE (12) I think the future of folk music is in very safe hands. I mean, any sort of music can stagnate or fail to re-invent itself, but there are so many new folk artists appearing, young musicians with amazing talent, and their versatility is encouraging. Bellowhead spring to mind, but well get to them in a few days. Fairport Convention always give a chance to young acts at Cropredy, some of whom re-appear through public demand. Again, I have to pick a representative to illustrate a blossoming career from recent years, and while it could have been Seth Lakeman or Damien Dempsey, both brilliant, Ill go for Kate Rusby. What particularly appeals to me is the Yorkshire accent which pokes through any song she attempts, and yet it sounds just right. She seems equally at home singing her own versions of traditional numbers, or cover versions and bringing something fresh to them. While I could have picked Wild Mountain Thyme , Awkward Annie or her great version of Ray Davies The Village Green Preservation Society Im going for a song which I previously thought over sentimental; it was written in the 50s and all sorts of people have recorded it, but her version opened my ears. https://youtube/watch?v=ULGnkLKL_co
