PHILS PERFORMANCE ARCHIVES (10) This next offering was recorded in late 72 or early 73 I think, and have to own up to a personal involvement. John Martyns Solid Air was produced and engineered at Basing St. by the excellent John Wood, and I was assistant on many of the sessions, and I think Dave Hutchins did others. As usual with iconic albums, you dont always realise they are at the time of conception, but we all knew this was a bit special. For a start there was the involvement of several Fairport Convention members, past and present, and everyone was into whatever John was trying to achieve. Amidst all the folk jazz experimentation came this one song I always loved, May You Never, just John and acoustic guitar. He tried several takes on different days before he got the one. I cant describe what it feels like to realise half way through a take that this was obviously it. I felt a little surprised when he immediately said he wanted to add something to the take, but it was so minimal, most people dont even hear it. Works a treat though! Tomorrows selection will be the last for a while, as were off up t north to see my mother and then camping at Carrog for a few days. youtube/watch?v=eQs6MvsPCXA
