Mr. Chris Millado, Artistic Director and Vice President of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) spoke on Making Art Matter: The Role of the CCP in the Life of Every Juan for this year’s lecture, which is the fifth in the annual series that features different Filipino scholars and experts. In his lecture, Mr. Millado spoke of the transformation of the premier art and cultural institution in the country, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), from being an elitist establishment to an open and inclusive institution that reached out to its broader public. He shared an insider’s view of the changes and present directions that has brought the CCP closer to the issues that matter to the people, the community and the nation. Mr. Millado also talked about his own journey from political street theater activist to becoming the Arts Manager of the largest cultural institution in the Philippines, and informed the audience on the significance of the arts in the 21st century. He capped his lecture with a video clip showcasing Philippine music, dance, theatre, and art exhibitions. The most significant point that Mr. Millado shared with his audience was when he declared that “art matters because it nurtures the soul, nourishes the spirit, and ultimately because it is art that makes us human.” Chris Millado graduated from the Theater Arts program of the University of the Philippines (UP), and later earned an MA in Performance Studies from New York University through a Fulbright Hayes scholarship. He also spearheaded the organization of several Filipino-American theater companies in the United States. At the start of the program, CLASS Dean Sellman delivered the welcome remarks on behalf of the UOG while Consul Edgar Tomas Q. Auxilian, Acting Head of Post, delivered the opening remarks on behalf of the Philippine Consulate General. Consul Auxilian also hosted a luncheon in honor of Mr. Millado at the Niji Japanese Restaurant at Hyatt Regency Hotel earlier that day. Peterson, Guam Community College President Dr. Mary Okada, Guam Community College Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Ray Somera, UOG faculty members and students, officers and members of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Guam, and other members of the Filipino community on the island.
