PHL CONSULATE GENERAL IN MILAN REGISTERS 90-YEAR OLD GREAT GRANDMOTHER FOR OVERSEAS VOTING 21 May 2014 – The Philippine Consulate General in Milan registered 90-year old Remedios Reyes as an overseas voter during its mobile consular outreach in Turin on May 18. The Philippine Consulate registered 56 new voters in Turin by the end of the day with six requests for change of address. Most noteworthy among the registrants was Remedios Reyes, who was born in Malate, Manila in December 1924. Mrs. Reyes was brought to Austria by her grandchildren in the 1980s and later settled in Turin, Italy. Mrs. Reyes was accompanied by her granddaughter, Myra Joyce Reyes, an overseas Filipino worker who came to Italy in 2001. “Nanay,” as Remedios is fondly called by her family, formerly worked as a seamstress in Pasay and then opened her own carinderia and magazine shop. When asked about Nanay’s secret to long life, Ms. Reyes commented that until recently, Mrs. Reyes was active in church and social clubs and is a fervent devotee of the Nazarene. Ms. Reyes jokingly added that her grandmother’s love for bagoong and pork might be vital ingredients to her grandmother’s constitution. Mrs. Reyes has six grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, the youngest of whom is two months old. The registration of Mrs. Reyes brings the Consulate’s total number of registered and revalidated voters to 255 since the start of overseas voters registration on May 06. The Consulate General, through its attendance in various Filipino community events and gatherings, continues to vigorously encourage the Filipino communities in Milan and Northern Italy to register and exercise their right of suffrage.
