PHUKET, Thailand—Robeno Javier pocketed the bronze medal in men’s duathlon to keep the medal streak of the Philippines going three days into the 4th Asian Beach Games here. Javier, the country’s top male duathlete, placed third behind gold medalist Ryo Sueoka of Japan and compatriot Yuya Fukaura in the five-kilometer run, 20km bike and 2.5km run event held at the Sirinat National Park. Sueoka zoomed ahead in the final kilometer and clocked 54 minutes and 20 seconds to nip Fukaura, who crossed the line five seconds later. The 29-year-old Javier timed 54:57 while Indonesia’s Johan Jauhari (56 minutes) and Filipino Carlo Pedregosa (56:30) placed fourth and fifth on the course made exhausting by the scorching heat. Javier, winner of the elite crown in the recent 2014 Active Health Duathlon, hit his strides in the company of Sueoka and Fukaura almost throughout before the Japanese duo accelerated ahead in the last run segment going to the finish. On track to make it a double bronze in women’s duathlon, world championship campaigner Mirasol Abad slowed down in the bike sequence on her way to the second transition and finished fourth. Japanese Yuri Kato ruled the race in 1:02:58, 28 seconds ahead of Macau’s Long Hoi and almost two minutes infront of Japan’s Matsumoto Fumika. Abad clocked 1:08:04 while the other Filipino bet, Miscelle Gilbuena, placed fifth (1:09:22). Abad and Gilbuena tagged along with Kato, Hoi and Fumika in the first five kilometers but suddenly lost steam in the bike part and fell behind the leaders by more than three minutes. ``It could had been a double bronze. But I’m not complaining. We’ve been winning medals since the competitions began,’’ said Philippine chef de mission Richard Gomez. The Philippines got a bronze medal courtesy of John Baylon in jujitsu Thursday and a pair of gold medals from Annie Ramirez and Maybelline Masuda the following day. Over at Karon Park, Mary Joy Galicia made the crucial plays in the end as Perlas Pilipinas got off to an auspicious start by defeating defending champion India, 13-11, in women’s 3x3 basketball. Galicia made a free throw and scored on a baseline drive that broke the last deadlock at 11 and sealed the win for Perlas. ``It was a tough battle. India had the height advantage but Lalaine (Flormata) did a good job against their bigs,’’ said team captain Melissa Jacob, the only remnant of the bronze-medal team in 2011 Haiyang. Nursing a flu, the 6-foot-2 Flormata forced 6-foot-3 center Rajapriy Rajaganapathi and power forward Jeena Palanilkumkalayil to miss their shots during the decisive moments. Galicia had seven points in the 10-minute match while Denise Patricia Tiu and Jacob added three and two points, respectively. ``We played well as a team but I credit Melissa for her leadership. She did what was expected of her,’ said Arsenio Dysangco. Perlas, backed by women’s basketball patron Cynthia Tiu, faces Mongolia on Sunday. In squash, Reymark Begornia and David Pelino failed to advance to the round of eight after absorbing identical 2-0 defeats in their initial outings. Wong Chi Hin of Hong Kong downed Begornia, 7-1, 7-5, while India’s Kush Kumar scored 7-5, 7-2 over Pelino. #BeATriathlete #sports #triathlon #triathlete #triathletes #multisport #run #bike #cycling #cyclist #events #Philippines #Pinoy #duathlon #duathlete
