PHYSICIANS TESTIMONY THAT CIRCUMCISION KILLS BABIES... I see patients that come in with an unnecessary procedure, and that are near death because of exsanguination [severe loss of blood]. ~Dr. Alex Rotta, a critical care pediatrician, at the 2014 AAP Convention Protest in San Diego. Heres my view of his powerful statement that afternoon. He subsequently wrote me this letter, announcing that he has joined Doctors Opposing Circumcision... To: brotherk Subject: Follow up from San Diego Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2014 00:54:51 +0000 Dear Brother K, Thank you very much for sharing your e-mail address with my daughter. I am not active on social media so I asked her to contact you on my behalf as recalled you telling me you were on facebook. I hope you remember me. I am a critical care pediatrician from Cleveland and we met in San Diego. I have been doing a lot of thinking since meeting you and your colleagues at the AAP conference. I feel a mixture of enthusiasm and shame. I am enthusiastic to have met a group of dedicated individuals working for a great cause and promoting education on such an important topic. I feel some degree of shame because I regret not having paid more attention to this issue in the past. I have treated a small number of children with serious complications from circumcisions who came into our emergency department or critical care unit, but while I was trying to save their lives, I never made the moral/ethical connection that those symptoms were a result of a totally unnecessary procedure. And that’s regretful. I have a strong opinion about personal autonomy and tend to think of these mostly in matters of culture and religion as it applies to children. It took seeing your group for me to connect the dots. The fact that I am a critical care physician puts me on “taking care of the problem” mode, but I failed to see that the problem (harm from circumcisions) only occurs because of another bigger problem, this one totally unnecessary and preventable: the circumcision itself. This is so simple and one would think that an educated individual could make that connection. But in my world, it is sometimes easy to miss the forest for the trees, I guess. Since meeting you and spending the past couple of weeks reflecting and educating myself, I have joined Doctors Opposing Circumcision. They have been very welcoming. I look forward to learning from and collaborating with that group. I also decided that, although I loathe the culturally biased AAP statement on circumcision and have considered not being associated with that organization anymore; I believe that perhaps it would be more beneficial if I were to remain active. If all the dissenting voices leave, the AAP will look less and less what it should look like: an organization that protects and advances the well being of children in this country. I look forward to contributing to your cause in any way I can. And I thank you for allowing me to approach your group, welcoming me with an open mind, educating me and, most of all, for fighting for such an important issue. Warmest regards, Alex Alexandre T.
