PIA-6 trains over a thousand campus writers in Panay By: Elsa S. Subong ILOILO CITY, Aug. 23 (PIA) – The Philippine Information Agency-6 has trained about 1,096 campus paper writers from the provinces of Iloilo, Guimaras, Capiz, Aklan and Antique, in the Panay leg of the yearly Journalism Workshops. PIA-6 Director Janet Mesa said the participants have been increasing year after year, which showed the interest of the schools in keeping campus journalism alive. Mesa said that PIA has taken the responsibility of training young writers, and their paper advisers, especially in development communication, to engage them in nation building through their publications. In fact, she added, school publications also reach out to communities through a Wall News which they are encouraged to produce once a year. “This wall news is posted in barangays of their choice, which their editorial boards consider to be information-poor,” Mesa said. She added that PIA has re-aligned its journalism trainings to the concept of convergence journalism, in response to the interplay of print, broadcast, photography and internet or social media. Mesa said the interplay of various forms becomes more appealing to readers, besides the fact that young people, including student writers, have become attuned to the use of these media in communicating. “This is high time wwe attune our trainings to convergence journalism, for our campus writers to be more competent and effective,” she said. For the first time, PIA has included Radio Broadcasting in the training modules. PIA has partnered with Smart Communications, now on it fourth year, to provide the campus writers with access on online journalism. Smart has provided school publications with access to accounts which allow them to have their publications published on line, and provided incentives to best bloggers/writers/photojournalists. Participants said in their evaluation, that they prefer PIA-6 trainings because it offers an array of modules very useful for paper writers. A student writer from the Jalandoni National High School in Iloilo City said she wanted to be trained on journalism properly, so she attended the training. Meanwhile, the last leg of the training will be with the campus writers in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental, on August 29-31.
