PIA of Eritrea Approved Qatar’s Bid to Modernize Port of Assab 9/25/13 PIA of Eritrea approved Qatar’s bid to modernize Port of Assab for future usage by the soon to be 100 million people strong Ethiopia. The approval was communicated to Qatari ministry of transportation by Eritrea’s resident ambassador in the tiny gulf nation. Qatar will expend close to a half billion dollars to complete the first phase of the project, eventually, by 2020, Qatar port authority will spend two billion dollars on the port to make Assab a hub of port services in the Red Sea region. The lease will be for 50 years and the Qatari port authority will have the freedom to sign a long term port usage agreement with any interested party for period of time less than 50 years. On different note, PIA has been dispatching his diplomats to Arab countries to solicit support for his idea to stage a horn of Africa peace conference where all issues in the horn will be discussed to map out a strategy to find an integrated solution for all the problems engulfing the horn. Sources are hinting that Turkey has agreed to host the conference! US also is believed to be behind the idea as it come to grips with reality that its national interest can’t be kept if its anchor nation Ethiopia slides into total anarchy. US diplomats are very concerned with developments in Ethiopia and urging Ethiopia to resolve it issues with Eritrea in order to concentrate on its national problems. Despite the public rhetoric between US and PIA of Eritrea, as the feud within TPLF intensifies, the US is engaged in quiet diplomacy with PIA regime to garner his support in finding an integrated solution in the horn.
