PLATEAU POLITICS: BE PART OF THE CHANGE YOU WANT One of the most annoying statements you hear from people when it comes to politics is that “I won’t engage in politics because I don’t want to spoil my name”. The implication of the statement speaks for itself. Those that make such statements imply that they want “politicians” to go and “sanitise” the system at the risk/expense of “spoiling their name” while they the “non-politicians” watch from the side and contribute to spoiling the politician’s name. If revered people like Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Pope John Paul II, Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Bishop Kukah and even Jesus Christ himself can be insulted and condemned despite their humility, positive contributions and eagerness to improve the society, then I find no reason why an average person should be scared of politics because of insults, unless the person strictly wants to be an “insulter” rather than an “insultee”. An uncle of mine once told me that, if you want to change the system, you have to be in the system. Do whatever you can to get into the system, and then from there you can start to effect the changes you believe in. Nobody can change the system from the outside. In lieu of this, I must give kudos to members of this forum like Gideon Dashe and others that have publicly declared their intentions to get into the system and effect the changes we all want. At least we know that such individuals are practically doing something to fix the system everyone is complaining about. Also kudos must be given to those that have decided to form/join an opposition party, at least they have taken a stand to try and change the system from the other side. They are far better than those that refuse to do anything but insult, undermine and mudsling everyone other than themselves. In addition, if you know that you’re not interested in joining politics or running for an elective position, then don’t discourage those who are actually putting in the effort to try and change the system. I have observed some certain individuals that have made a hobby and pastime out of insulting every single candidate that comes out to run for an elective position. What manner of discouragement is that? You have refused to enter the system to fix it, and yet your stock in trade is insulting those that intend to “fix the system”. These same individuals when asked, have no singleperson to present for those positions. Hence you wonder then of what use is their ranting when they can’t suggest an alternative? Then there is the other category that have their preferred candidate and chose to insult every other candidate that declares interest for their candidate’s intended position. I’m delighted to inform them that no candidate has ever won any election simply based on mudslinging. Rather, they end up losing supporters for their candidate. An example happened day before yesterday, where a member of one of the Plateau forums vowed never to support or vote for his initial choice of a certain gubernatorial aspirant due to the way his co-supporters were insulting other candidates. I guess they don’t know the importance of the one vote they just lost. In conclusion, if you are not interested in personally changing the system, then allow those that are planning to come in to change the system or hold your peace. There is absolutely no one on earth that is 100% perfect or fits all the laid down criteria or attributes of a great leader. As humans, we can only come close to perfection, but never attain it. #100%PlateauSentimental -Gurumwal George Longjan
