PLEASE HELP THIS CAUSE University of Manitoba Students’ Union Campus Garden 101 University Center Winnipeg, MB R3T 2N2 June 5, 2013 Dear Community Stakeholder, The UMSU Campus Garden and the Rainbow Community Garden are working to create a space that facilitates knowledge sharing, community building, and healing. We call it Project Picnic. When a single mom new to Winnipeg from a refugee camp comes with her children to the garden she does more than grow her own food to meet their physical needs. By sitting and sharing her stories with the listening ear of a fellow gardener her emotional and relational needs are also being met. We are part of her healing journey. When a patient or other visitor from the Victoria General Hospital next door wanders over to our community garden they are touched by its beauty. Guests are free to sit or to walk through and enjoy seeing what our gardeners have growing. Our garden provides a break from the painful realities that health challenges bring. Students have an opportunity in the UMSU Campus Garden to grow their own food and connect on issues around food sustainability, food security and healthy living. They are also looking the needs of the world in the eye when building relationships across social, cultural and economic boundaries. This is a truly unique opportunity. The seating area we currently have to facilitate this consists of a few rows of rusty old chairs on overgrown grass. Project Picnic is our effort to create a beautifully kept space that includes 10-15 brightly coloured picnic tables. The cost of Project Picnic is estimated at $7000. We already have $2500 in donated labour and one picnic table sponsored, which means we need to raise $4500. These funds will be used to purchase picnic tables and the materials required to create a clean and level foundation. Our goal is to have this project completed by the end of June so we can also use this space to host community garden picnics and gardening workshops. Project Picnic tables can be sponsored for $250 each and the foundation for our project can be sponsored at a cost of $500. Consider sponsoring with a friend, sponsor as a business, as a student group or faculty. Each picnic table sponsor will have their name on a card that will be secured to a table. The foundation sponsor(s) will have their name(s) placed on a sign that will rest on the foundation. One table has already been sponsored and we are confident these will go quickly. I look forward to hearing from you soon and can be reached at the contact information provided below. Thank you for helping us to create a space that facilitates knowledge sharing, community building and healing. Sincerely, Tammy Junghans UMSU Campus Garden Programmer garden@umsu.
