PLEASE READ - IMPORTANT INFO! Ive posted regarding the proposed power plant in Oakwood Hills, a mere five miles away from Wauconda. Ive also seen posts from Will Tremont and Kimberly Jacobson with only a couple likes each and no comments. THIS IS SOMETHING WE NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO Neighboring communities have pledged their official commitment to oppose this facility. The pic posted here is from Island Lakes village meeting minutes. It was discussed and voted on in an official manner. (Thank you Island Lake) Why has there not been at least official discussion on a village meeting level in Wauconda?? This $500 million facility will draw 1.5 million gallons of water a day - I believe we are connected to the same aquifer as Oakwood Hills as we are connected to Island Lake. While we will eventually switch to Lake Michigan water (hopefully), our wells will remain active if there is an interruption to LM water services. This facility will put a huge strain on the water supply (this why LM water is so important). Water is becoming a valuable resource, we cannot in the future rely wholly on its existence. Also, since Wauconda is in direct line of pollution plumes from this plant, it should be an issue to us all, and especially those who are young, elderly, those with heart or lung diseases, and especially with respiratory issues like asthma. While emissions from gas-fired power plants are lower than coal-fired plants, the emissions from gas- fired plants are dangerous in that the particles are so fine they bypass the bodys natural respiratory filter system and end up deep in the lungs. The EPA states there is no safe limit to exposure to these emissions. WHILE THIS POWER PLANT IS NOT BEING BUILT IN WAUCONDA, HEALTH AND WATER SUPPLY ARE A CONCERN. And what is of most concern to me is the lack of knowledge and official discussion given to the residents of Wauconda from our Village. I already posted that someone spoke at our village meeting a month ago asking for our support and our mayor knew absolutely nothing about it (its consistently been in the news for two months). Our mayor even asked if it was a gas or coal fired plant (yikes) then passed it off to our environmental committee to look into it. This is not just a committee issue, we should be using our professional resources - what does our village engineer have to say and what information can he give us? Has the regional water supply report (which I believe our village has a copy of) been looked at? Finally the most frustrating part of this is that I asked our mayor in an email what his thoughts/stance were regarding this topic. He never responded to me. So I guess I know what he thinks of this.... Since our village is not willing to step up and commit to an official stance please educate yourself. The time is now as this will be voted on by the Oakwood Hills board soon. Just because its not being built in our town doesnt mean it doesnt affect Wauconda. And shame on Wauconda for not being neighborly to our surrounding communities by weighing in on this issue. But I guess our village hands are so full of other issues like 911 dispatch and LM water that something like this just falls through the cracks.....
