PLURILINGUALISM VS MULTILINGUALISM Plurilingualism is the concept promoted by the Council of Europe in its Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR for short). It is a subtle yet profound shift in perspective towards the use of multiple languages, and one that will benefit you by removing a lot of pressure to achieve perfection. In their definition, multilingualism is the co-existence of different languages, whether in the mind of an individual or a society, and represents a diversification of languages available. Plurilingualism, on the other hand, emphasizes that a persons languages and cultures are not kept in strictly separated mental compartments, but that the languages in ones head will interrelate and interact to contribute to the growth of communication skills as a whole. So even the littlest bit of a new language would build your abilities to communicate by providing you more tools to do so, even if they are rudimentary and context-specific. If you learned the basics of, say, Portuguese, your abilities to navigate through Brazil will have greatly increased, even though you are not perfectly fluent. Its a more enlightened approach to language learning, taking much of the pressure off of you, the language learner, in trying to achieve perfection. As the CEFR puts it: From this perspective, the aim of language education is profoundly modified. It is no longer seen as simply to achieve mastery of one or two, or even three languages, each taken in isolation, with the ideal native speaker as the ultimate model. Instead, the aim is to develop a linguistic repertory, in which all linguistic abilities have a place. What does this mean for you? It means you can be happy and satisfied with having learned even the smallest snippet of language—a single phrase, a song, even a single word—knowing that you are further than you were a moment before. This is far healthier than constantly focusing on how far you are from perfect.
