PM DECLARES J&K FLOODS A “NATIONAL DISASTER”, NO HEADWAY FOR CARITAS TEAM SO FAR. PM Modi, who took an aerial view of the flood-affected regions today, said the current crisis was a national level disaster”. He has announced a special assistance of Rs.1,000 crore. (10 billion) “Caritas Officer Prakash Singh could not reach the affected areas and is stuck somewhere around the airport” informed North Zonal Incharge Girish, who was constantly in touch with him. “We also have challenges in establishing contacts with him presently” Girish said. Srinagar city has reportedly no power, no road accessibility, no local transport and no hotels. Caritas is contemplating if it needs to move its operation base from Srinagar to Jammu, which is a 12 hour long drive and could be even worse with news of the highway remaining closed. With media reporting of two Army men being washed off in the floods, we can well imagine the situation only getting tough every hour. Meanwhile Executive Director Fr. Frederick D’Souza who is in Nepal for a meeting said “We stand by the nation in solidarity with poor and the people affected by the disaster. We will do everything we can to join hands with govt to bring relief and rehabilitation for the people of Kashmir.” Photo courtesy: Sphere India
