FROM THE VISAYAN DAILY STAR: Trillion peso mega bridges need gov’t ok BY CARLA GOMEZ Foreign contractors have arrived in Negros Occidental reportedly to back a trillion peso bridge project being initiated by a group called New Negros Integrated North and South Realty Development Corp. The group reportedly plans to build a bridge that will connect Negros Occidental from Valladolid town to Guimaras, and another to link Guimaras to Iloilo. Another bridge is also being planned to connect Negros Occidental from San Carlos City to Toledo in Cebu. Officials yesterday said they welcome investors, but proper coordination and approval of such projects by government must be obtained for them to be undertaken. Private groups announcing plans to build bridges to interconnect Negros to Guimaras, Panay or Cebu need the approval of the Regional Development Council, National Economic and Development Authority regional director Ro-ann Bacan said. She said no such proposal has reached the NEDA yet. Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said that if there are investors willing to build a bridge that would interconnect Negros to Guimaras, or to other areas, that is most welcome, but they must first prove that they have the capitalization needed for the project. The governor said a feasibility study conducted during the term of Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon shows that to build a bridge that would connect Barangay Tomongtong in EB Magalona to Banate in Iloilo would cost $1.5 billion. The NNINSRDC also reportedly plans a 100-hectare reclamation project in Brgy. Palaka, Valladolid, to be followed by the Valladolid-Guimaras bridge, a gymnasium, a hospital, a transport terminal, a market, hotels and, if possible, a golf course. But Valladolid Mayor Romel Yogore said he has not entertained the group because it has not submitted an exact plan to the municipal government. “I am asking them for their feasibility study,” he said.*CPG
