PODEMOS? What happens to a country whose unemployment rate remains unconscionably high? Spain, with 26 percent unemployment, found out last weekend. In voting for the European Parliament, Spain’s two major parties – the Popular Party and the Socialists – had their clocks cleaned by a three-month old, substantially underfunded ($176,000) but social media-savvy party called Podemos. The upstart won 8 percent of the Spanish vote and five seats in the European Parliament. Podemos was “anti-establishment, anti-austerity and heavily youth- and Internet based” reported The New York Times. Pablo Inglesias, a college professor who started Podemos, said in an interview, I’ve always been from the left, but our problems cannot be explained in terms of a left-right ideology, but in terms of a fighting the privileged that are abusing the majority of citizens below them.”
