But Deputy Police spokesperson, Polly Namaye said “the king is free and there has not been any attempt by the police to summon or arrest him under any circumstance.” Interestingly, Namaye added that should there arise a need to have Mumbere quizzed, Police will not hesitate to take appropriate measures. “Nobody is above the law and if need arises to have the king summoned the police will not desist,” said Namaye. She said this would happen “in the interest of protecting the lives and properties of all Ugandans equally.” This is the first time in a very long time that Police are daring a cultural leader. President Museveni this week accused cultural leaders in Rwenzori of whipping up ethnic sentiments for their selfish objectives. But Mumbere fired back at Museveni, saying government should do more to reconcile communities in the region. “The security agencies have been quick to claim that the attacks were a result of tribal differences and yet they targeted the police and the army. There is a danger of chasing the wrong enemy and so further investigations must be made to ascertain this,” warned Mumbere in his address to the media on Thursday.
