POPCRU CONDEMNS EFF’S BEHAVIOUR The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) is angered by the behaviour demonstrated by Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Gauteng Legislature yesterday. The party has since post-elections been demonstrating its unruly conduct in different forums subsequently bringing the National Assembly and Provincial Legislatures into disrepute. It is the right of every political party possessing seats in Parliament and the legislatures to take part in proceedings and debates, therefore parties need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern the houses. The EFF has, however, defied the set rules and regulations in both houses forcing the NCOP Chairperson in Parliament and the Gauteng Speaker to chase them out of the respective institutions during proceedings. Their attire and conduct emulates that of hooligans obsessed with lawlessness. Yesterday members of the South African Police Services were left with no choice but to use force in order to disperse the chaotic EFF protesters. This came after they vandalised property as they demanded access into the legislature. This behaviour is unbecoming of any South African citizen whose aim is to work towards a successful country which we can all pride ourselves with. POPCRU is grateful to the many men and women who were deployed to the scene for restoring order at the Gauteng Legislature. The union understands that every party has the right to represent its members but such barbaric actions will not be tolerated in a democratic South Africa which is governed by laws. We cannot allow anarchy from any political party or societal grouping to reign. The union calls for strict measures to be taken against the EFF and that they are ordered to pay for damages incurred during the raucous. We further condemn allegations that EFF leader Julius Malema referred to the police as monkeys during a media interview. POPCRU will explore further action over the derogatory terms used in reference to our members who work hard day and night to keep all South Africans safe and secure.
