He prays to it and says, Save me! You are my god! Some pour out gold from their bags and weigh out silver on the scales; they hire a goldsmith to make it into a god, and they bow down and worship it. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. She has not acknowledged that I was the one who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil, who lavished on her the silver and gold-- which they used for Baal. Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone! They set up kings without my consent; they choose princes without my approval. With their silver and gold they make idols for themselves to their own destruction. Samaria, throw out your calf-idol! My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of purity? They are from Israel! This calf--a metalworker has made it; it is not God. It will be broken in pieces, that calf of Samaria. The people who live in Samaria fear for the calf-idol of Beth Aven. Its people will mourn over it, and so will its idolatrous priests, those who had rejoiced over its splendor, because it is taken from them into exile. Assyria cannot save us; we will not mount warhorses.
