POPULAR FRONT PROTEST AGAINST DEATH PENALTY ON ‘ANTI-TORTURE’ - TopicsExpress

POPULAR FRONT PROTEST AGAINST DEATH PENALTY ON ‘ANTI-TORTURE’ DAY It is heart breaking to note that deaths in police custody and prisons are on the increase in different parts of India. The recent deaths of Qatheel Siddiqui in Maharashtra jail and Khalid Mujahid in the custody of UP police are indications of this condemnable trend. The courts are now more inclined to giving death penalties which, in fact, should be confined to rarest of rare cases. As we have seen in the case of Afsal Guru, death penalty which is the ultimate and irrevocable torture that can be inflicted on a human being can be awarded just to satisfy ‘the collective conscience of society’. In the record number of death sentences the Indian position is next only to that of Pakistan among all nations. During this year’s Anti-torture Day campaign Popular Front is joining the demand by human rights activists and true democrats in India and abroad to stop capital punishment. Popular Front of India observed ‘Anti-Torture Day’ today on the occasion ofUnited Nations International Day in support of Victims of Torture. AndhraPradesh state unit had organized a protest in front of Hyderabad District Collector office today at 11:00 a.m. Popular Front’s cadres & other rights activists have joined the protest and expose various forms of torture against helpless innocents, those accused in crimes and under trail prisoners. We have also demanded toabolish death penalty in India. Later a memorandum was submittedto the Hyderabad district collector in his chamber. With regards & request to publish thematter, Mohammed Arif Ahmed General Secretary, Popular Front of India, A.P
