PORTABLE WATER SCARCITY IN WARRI/EFFURUN TO END SOON ***as Delta State Government set to commission phase 1 of the Warri/Effurun Regional Water Scheme. By Nelson Egware WARRI-AS part of the activities for the commissioning of the Warri/Effurun Regional Water Works project, the Delta State Ministry of Water Resources has inspected repaired water pipelines in Warri and Uvwie Local Government areas to ensure that the project is commissioned for use in a few weeks time. The Honorable Commissioner for Water Resources Hon. Dr. Chris Oghenechovwen who led the inspection team that comprised of top ministry officials, AIC Consultants and A.G Goldtrust Nigeria Limited as well as the Nigeria Society of Engineers said the project commenced in 1989 with the assistance of the African Development Bank ADB, but was abandoned in 1995 as a result of military rule. Dr Oghenechovwen further stated that the project was reactivated under the Ibori Administration but could not be concluded due to funding challenges. The Uduaghan Administration took over the project and the first phase has been completed with the inspection of the repaired damaged pipeline network. The honorable Commissioner described the project as one of the areas the Governor Uduaghan Administration is finishing strong. He said the purpose of the project is to build a single water scheme that will serve more people and move from small schemes to Municipal and regional schemes, curb infections, comply with WHO water standards and improving the Human Development Index (HDI). He urged users not to drink the water yet as the pipes are being flushed out and assured them that in a week time, the water will be available for drinking after it had undergone treatment. The Inspection took the team to 23 Zones and over 100 streets in Warri and Effurun where water was confirmed to be flowing in all the taps inspected. The Commissioner said the water is being test run as a prelude to the commissioning which has seen over 3,400 homes connected out of the 15,000 homes earmarked for the second phase. Special Adviser to the Governor on (Religious Affairs) Rev. Godspower Agbuduta who met the team along Giwa Amu road lauded the project and advised the Delta State Urban Water board to connect more homes to enable government generate some revenue from it as is the practice in most parts of the world. According to Engr. Femi Fateru Project Manager AG Goldtrust Limited, the contractors handling the pipeline repairs said the Warri/Effurun regional Water works is the Tallest and biggest water tower in the whole of West Africa. He said a total of 189km of water pipeline network is expected to be constructed while 140km has been connected so far. Engr. Fateru assured that the pipes are of the best quality in the world with a life span of 90 years.
