PORTYS DAILY PITCH 4 NOV 2014 MONEY, MONEY, MONEY Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice.” ― Mahatma Gandhi “Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.” ― Oscar Wilde “Everyone wants to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” ― Oprah Winfrey The business Ive devoted my career to is none like any other business in the world. 90% of Hollywood is hurry up and wait, and wait and wait (always for the dollars to come in). Then theres the 10% where its go time and the money pours in. And usually its that revenue during that 10% that has to carry you through the rest of the 90%. Feast and Famine. People judge Hollywood for the inflated fees that some us make. A first time Screenwriter can make a WGA minimum of $93,257 selling an original screenplay. A SAG Actor can pull in a minimum of $3,358/wk (not including Over Time [after 8 hours]). While that seems like a lot of money compared to wages outside Hollywood you have to consider the total amount of time it took that person getting there. For example, the average time it takes for a first time Screenwriter to create, develop and finally sell that script usually takes 5 to 7 years. During that time that Screenwriter might be catering or working retail just to make ends meet. And if you take that $93K, divide it by 7 years, it comes out to around $13K per year. The very successful Hollywood Producer Lynda Obst put it best in her book (which I highly recommend) HELLO, HE LIED: You cant make a living in Hollywood, you can only become rich (referencing those big paydays announced in the trades). So the key for us when we make it big is to not go all out and make it rain (like an NFL Football Player). Theres an amazing ESPN Doc called 30 FOR 30- BROKE on youtube that covers how these athletes (basically kids) deal with an extreme amount of money in a short period of time. Some are smart, some arent and the rest get taken advantage of by predators. Ive been blessed by #BLACKJESUS (yes, that was intended). The show has allowed me to live comfortably while developing my projects and taking on other little projects (#AVOUTERIE). Its also allowed me to donate and tithe a little. While living with a fixed income, I have also been applying A+H principles of having positive thoughts about money coming in down the road. Instead of focusing on what I dont have I look at what I do have and envision projects coming together. I also put my faith in my Higher Power (God) that he will take care of things. And up to this point he has. Living on a fixed income helps build a future. A great musical track to listen to while going over your budget is FIXED INCOME by DJ Shadow. Enjoy your feast but save some for the famine.
