POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT Stewardship Manager July 2013 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Stewardship Manager reports to and works with the Tejon Ranch Conservancy’s Conservation Science Director in the implementation of the Conservancy’s science and stewardship programs, including the development, administration, management, and coordination of Conservancy field projects. General project administration and management is a key function. Responsibilities include project management and site supervision for science and land management activities; tracking and managing contracts; administrative support, including processing check requests, filing, correspondence, scheduling and maintaining project equipment; coordinating the deployment of research and stewardship crews; interfacing with operations staff at Tejon Ranch Company; and participating in science and stewardship activities. This may include one or more of the following functions: • Plans and manages the deployment of science programs and stewardship activities; • Coordinates closely with Tejon Ranch Company on Conservancy field activities; • Identifies and helps pursue agency funding for enhancement and restoration project implementation; • Implements adaptive management monitoring and evaluates project success; • Maintains tools and equipment. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: • Bachelor’s degree or higher in science-related field, and minimum 5 years of experience in ecological land management or relevant field. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. • Strong project management experience; Demonstrated experience managing diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results. • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems, particular grasslands, riparian and wetlands, and oak woodlands. Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to implement management activities. • Knowledge of ecological land management principles and current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource enhancement/restoration. • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Outlook, Web browsers). Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) a plus. • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages. COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING: • Coordinates multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes. • Interprets guidelines, evaluates information, and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances. • Resolves routine issues independently, consulting with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of complex and unusual problems. • Cultivates and develops creative ideas to improve conservation strategies. • Applies diversified knowledge of scientific principles and practices to a variety of assignments. DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING: • Makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and judgment. • Perform under minimal supervision, consulting with supervisor in event of any unusual circumstance, problem or question that falls outside of general management realm. RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY: • May lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, contractors, interns, and volunteers. • Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, coordinating with funders, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and meeting fundraising targets. COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS: • Networks with diverse groups, including Tejon Ranch Company, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy efforts. • Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization. • Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, contractors, and regional partners, providing and obtaining needed information. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT: The Stewardship Manager may work in variable weather conditions, at remote parts of Tejon Ranch, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions: • Require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. • Present frequent possibility of injury. • Require long hours in isolated settings.
