High school diploma or general education (GED) is desirable; two years of electrical experience in a variety of applications involving new construction, repair, and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Some knowledge of the methods, tools, materials, and practices of the electrical trade. Some knowledge of the National Electricial Code (NEC). Some knowledge of fire alarm, security, intercom and clock systems. Ability to read, write, and work from blueprints and specifications. Ability to use computers for work order processing, ordering materials and communications. Ability to comply with all safety rules and regulations relating to the field of electricity. Must possess a valid Virginia commercial driver’s license. BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK: This is a semi-skilled electrical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance activities throughout the Prince William County School System. The work is performed under the general supervision of a journey electrical mechanic, crew chief, or shop foreman. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. DIMENSIONS: Grade 6; 7.5 hours/day DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK: Include, but are not limited to the following: Performs semi-skilled work assisting in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of all electrical service in school facilities and grounds. Performs some electrical work on appliances, including air conditioners, refrigeration equipment, stoves, dryers, compressors, and transformers. Performs electrical work on lighting fixtures, pole lights, stage lights, and electric appliance. Perform work on fire alarm, security, intercom and clock systems. Assists higher skill level employees in more difficult electrical maintenance work. Responds to emergency duty assignments when required by supervisor. Attends classes or seminars relating to the repair and maintenance of electrical systems and components. Performs other duties as assigned.
