POST GONZALO SUPPORT Dear Fellow citizens, nationals and our other supporters, I am certain that by now, you are all aware of the devastation to Antigua and Barbuda caused by the natural disaster, Tropical Storm, Gonzalo this past Monday October 13. Though all of the assessments have not yet been completed, I have been reliably informed that the wind force has decimated our vegetation and our farmers have been gravely affected. The Mount St. John Medical Center has recorded upwards of 35 persons who required medical care due the effects of the cyclone. They have already been discharged, since their cases were not life threatening. As is expected, electricity/water supply and telecommunication were all compromised in the process. The APUA is feverishly working to restore power to the island, including Barbuda. As you can imagine, many persons are without food because refrigeration was inoperable and still is for many. This is in fact, a “set back” for the island. A lot of the schools were closed to the students. The rainfall recorded was minimal while the wind was overwhelming. Many homes were damaged, i.e. roofing, spouting, tank covers, etc were all negatively affected. This is the time for a call to action to literally “Rebuild the Nation”. With this in mind, I am admonishing that we in North America must play our part in assisting with “Care Packages” as a group. I believe it would be prudent for all of us in this region to donate a variety of nonperishable items to help our sisters and brothers back home. I know that there will be some skepticism as to who will have access to your donations. I am now liaising with disaster preparedness groups and the Ministry, responsible for disaster to make this exercise worthwhile. I will announce soonest the “drop off locations” in the Tri-State area. Anyone who wishes to volunteer as a “Drop-Off Location”, feel free to inbox me with the pertinent information. The Good News is there is no loss of life in relation to the storm. Let us all show our value by donating cheerfully. “Each endeavouring, All achieving.” Thanks, all.
