POSTBAG CBU Editor, I have followed keenly the letters to the editor published in your paper recently on the state of The Copperbelt University. Somehow I cannot agree more or any less by the two students who wrote the articles. Many things are terribly pathetic at CBU but to the contrary, I would like to focus my energies to note with gladness the many positive changes and growth CBU has undergone in such a short space, while I stand opposed to the priorities of some of the developments. In the five years I have been a student at this university, more recently, general security has improved. This can be noted by the steel rail barricades installed at both main entrances. Security lights too have been installed at strategic locations. The use of dog handlers, especially at night and the securing of perimeter areas, and most importantly we have CBU security offices decentralised and located within hostel blocks. I have noted with grave gratitude the attempts by the university to improve sanitation in hostels although this has not yielded anything to write home about. A year ago the university installed new toilet pots, tiled up all the bathrooms, changed old traditional urinals to new ones and painted the interiors of the ablution blocks, ending years of unpleasant graffiti. However, due to substandard services, use of inappropriate toilet materials and lack of care, mostly by some students, sanitation still remains pathetic. Whoever came to CBU some years back will be marvelled at the general scenery of the university although some hostel blocks haven’t yet been painted. There has been a general improvement in infrastructure but non in terms of hostel blocks or better still, classroom space. The chapel has received a facelift. It now looks a house of worship though it’s still too small. Final year student
