POSTPONEMENT OF CHAOS AND FUTURE UNCERTAINTIES. Give Us Justice Most of the presidential candidates in the last elections stormed the Nima residence of their New Patriotic Party (NPP) counterpart, Nana Akufo-Addo yesterday. A rare visit as it was, it sent people seeking the motive behind the trip. As expected, it turned out to be a goodwill mission, part of the nationwide peace campaign which had the leaders exchanging pleasantries and sharing thoughts on mutual issues which is good for inter-party harmony. It was a mission worth doffing hats for although some of the persons on the visitors’ list carried a baggage which casts doubts about their sincerity; as their previous political comments have polarized the country more than unify her to enhance the cause of democracy. Be that as it may, we acknowledge and appreciate the spirit behind the mission and pray that the dividends it is intended to achieve do not elude us. Ghana has come a long way since the attainment of independence and should be spared the political hiccups which tend to retard her progress. Good governance continues to be a mirage and justice, one of the components of our national motto, has, for some time, remained a rarity. Law enforcement, an aspect of the administration of justice, has been contaminated with pockets of shortcomings such as selectivity. Political murders in the not too distant past continue to haunt people with links to the victims. Justice is the only means of offering the aggrieved the succour that can keep them from exploring the possibility of seeking revenge. While the talk about peace continues to feature on the political landscape, it should not be lost on us that this virtue is the product of justice. Need we not therefore seek justice because when this is attained, peace will naturally follow? The talk and campaign about peace in the country at a time when we are invariably at peace with each other, for us, is overhyped. In all parts of the world, the absence of justice has fuelled the breakdown of law and order and therefore peace. Political justice, economic justice and social justice all play critical roles in the advancement of peace in any given country such as ours. Justice steeped in equity and fairness should be upheld sincerely. When this is swept away, peace is threatened and the foundation of society is undermined. Ghanaians can recall with broken hearts, instances where selectivity in the application of the law has let criminals off the hook of justice. It is our prayer that the Justices of the Supreme Court will be bold enough to deliver justice for their Motherland. Let us talk and work towards justice, and peace will follow.
