PPP preview for MONDAY, April 7: The Army has long had a ban on twists and dreadlocks. Very recently, however, it decided to update its Army Regulation 670-1 with more detailed definitions of banned styles. For example, the Army does not allow twists or multiple braids bigger than a quarter of an inch in diameter. In addition, cornrows can be no bigger than a quarter of an inch. A Sgt. in the National Guard wears her hair in twists and has created a White House petition to block the new regulation and thousands soldiers have signed. They are calling for the president to order the Army to reconsider just-released appearance and grooming regulations they contend are “racially biased” against black women.
