PPRC News Brief 29th October 2014 The Chairman of the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) Hon Justice M.E. Tolla Thompson on Wednesday 29th October 2014 launched the PPRC/Political Parties Ebola Intervention Project. Launching the project Hon Justice Thompson expressed satisfaction as Political Parties have taken the centre stage in the fight against Ebola. This he says is a step in the right direction as the virus is affecting the people whom the political parties needed the most. Hon Justice Thompson says it is the responsibility of political parties to engaged in such as it is enshrined in section 35(1) of the 1991 constitution which states “political parties may be established to participate in shaping the political will of the people, to disseminate information on political ideas, and social and economic programmes of a national character, and to sponsor candidates for Presidential, Parliamentary or Local Government elections”. Speaking on the Project, the Acting Chairman of the All Political Parties Association (APPA) and Chairman and Leader of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) Mohamed Bangura, says the role of political parties is very crucial and important in the fight against Ebola. If Political Parties fails to collectively fight against Ebola, Mr Bangura says the democratic programmes will be forestalled as they are eager to contest the next elections. He cautioned Political Party representatives that they are not going to perform the duties of health workers but to serve as monitors of quarantine homes, rapid response and burial teams. He says it will be there responsibility to cross check information received so far and share them with key stakeholders for prompt action. He implored party representatives present to take this fight seriously as this is their fight. The project which will last for three months will be implemented in Freetown, Moyamba, Bo, Kenema, Kailahun, Kono, Bombali and Port Loko Districts. For more information contact: 078201770/078715283
